Tuatha de Dannan are skilled at opening portals and teleportation. Their Firstborn are Amorica and Elton, and they are claimed by Oberon.
About[]
The Tuatha are one of the few species of fae with two Firstborn, siblings Elton and Amorica. It is possible to trace a Tuatha's lineage back to one of the two based on their magical signature, although only another Firstborn is likely to know how to do so.[citation needed] The Tuatha are claimed by Oberon, suggesting that the race tends toward heroism.[citation needed]
Tuatha de Dannan are teleporters, able to open portals from one point to another. The longer the distance, the more magic is needed. However, a changeling Tuatha without power limiters can teleport without limits at the expense of damaging the spaces between realms and destroying Faerie - so far two changelings have been seen to have these powers. The only way to fix this without killing the changeling is to remove the humanity from those changelings completely, rendering them pureblooded and able to control their powers.
Tuatha de Dannan resemble Daoine Sidhe and Tylwyth Teg with pointed ears and metallic-colored eyes. They tend to have darker hair, sometimes to an almost blue-purple sheen.[1]
Characters[]
Etienne[]
Etienne is a knight, master-at-arms, and seneschal of Shadowed Hills. He is a teleporter and able to make portals for others, and lends his talents to both his liege and to October Daye. When he rescues his daughter Chelsea Ames from her rogue magic, his own teleporting abilities get nullified for a full year.[2] He has remarkable copper eyes.
Chelsea Ames[]
Chelsea, Etienne's daughter, was born a changeling in the human world. Her mother helped her hide her unnaturally copper eyes and pointed ears with contacts and long hair, but she did not know how to spin her own illusions. When Chelsea became a teenager, her teleporting powers began to develop. At first she carefully documented her jumps, but due to her nature as an overpowered changeling, the power soon spiraled out of control. It was exacerbated when Treasa Riordan and Samson interfere to use her for their own gains with the usage of a charm derived from her own blood. With Toby's help, Etienne doses her with a potion to nullify her powers for a full year, and then Toby gives Chelsea the Changeling's choice and shifts her blood to full Tuatha.[2] Chelsea has since regained access to her powers and is learning how to use them properly, and acts as the day guard for Shadowed Hills due to her diurnal schedule.[3]
Arden Windermere[]
Arden is the rightful Queen of the Mists. She was in hiding for some time because Eira Rosynhwyr manipulated the citizens of the Mists to believe that the false Queen was next in line despite having no Tuatha blood. When Arden and Toby team up to depose the false Queen, Arden uses her teleporting powers to get Toby away from the false Queen's Siren call.
When Madden is elf-shot, Arden panics and uses a portal to flee to Borderlands. Toby convinces her to return.[4]
When the false Queen kidnaps Nolan, Arden offers Toby her own blood as part of the search to use for portalling and then follows along with an army for backup. Afterward, Arden portals Toby to the Kingdom of Silences to confirm that the false Queen is no longer in their custody.[5]
Nolan Windermere[]
Nolan is Arden's brother and Prince of the Mists. While he is asleep, Toby is able to use his blood to borrow his teleporting ability to get them both to safety.[1]
Gilad Windermere[]
Gilad is Arden and Nolan's father and the last King of the Mists.
Sebille[]
Sebille is Arden and Nolan's mother and Gilad's secret lover.[6]
Denley and Nola Windermere[]
Gilad's parents and founding monarchs of the Mists.[7]
Oleander de Merelands[]
Oleander is half Tuatha, half Peri, and an infamous assassin. She uses her portaling abilities to help her access her marks and get away cleanly.[8]
Rhys[]
Rhys is the deposed king of the Kingdom of Silences. He gained his throne through the false Queen's influence.[9]
Unnamed Changeling[]
A Tuatha changeling was stolen by Blind Michael. His human side was stronger than his fae despite being an overpowered changeling, so he became one of the horses of the Wild Hunt. When August Torquill traveled through Blind Michael's Realm searching for Oberon, she took him. His powers were ultimately too strong, much like Chelsea's, and he died ripping walls through Faerie.[10]
Mythology[]
Tuatha de Dannan directly translates to "the folk of the goddess Danu" in Irish. They have also been called the Tuath Dé, or "tribe of the gods." The Tuath Dé eventually became the Aos Sí or "fairies" of later folklore, a synonym to the Daoine Sidhe.
They represent the Irish pantheon of deities in pagan times. The Christian monks who recorded their legends often depicted the Tuath Dé as kings, queens and heroes of the distant past who had supernatural powers; as fallen angels who were neither good nor evil; and occasionally as gods. The pantheon included specific deities of the hunt, healing, death, warriors, the sea, and metalsmithing and craftsmanship.
The Tuatha Dé Danann were descended from Nemed, leader of a previous wave of inhabitants of Ireland. They came from four cities to the north of Ireland—Falias, Gorias, Murias and Finias—where they taught their skills in the sciences, including architecture, the arts, and magic, including necromancy
The Tuath Dé dwell in the Otherworld but interact with humans and the human world. They are associated with ancient passage tombs, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Their traditional rivals are the Fomorians (Fomoire), who seem to represent the harmful or destructive powers of nature.[11]
