Torin is the younger brother of Dianda Lorden and the son of Morcan of Saltmist and an unnamed mother. He is heir to the Duchy of Bluefish. He first appears in The Unkindest Tide.

About[]

Appearance[]

Torin is a large, muscled Merrow man with dark hair and golden-brown skin. Toby remarks how much he and Dianda resemble each other.[1]

Personality[]

Torin is an arrogant man who thinks land fae are beneath him and not worth associating with. He is also a firm believer in Evening, foolishly believing her lies that the Roane's gift of prophecy was causing conflicts of Faerie and that they died to protect it.

Biography[]

Torin and Dianda's parents divorced as soon as the children were old enough to choose which parent to go with. Torin chose their mother, and Dianda chose their father, so the two of them had not seen each other for several decades after that. Torin is two years younger than Dianda.[2]

In the Series[]

The Unkindest Tide[]

Torin shows up at the Duchy of Ships to berate his sister for keeping company with "landers, animals and creatures of the air"[1], and accuses her of shaming their father's name. He immediately arrests Dianda by the authority of Queen Palatyne of Leucothea, further cementing it by using Toby's status as a kingbreaker among Fae nobility. Meanwhile, he sent forces to take Saltmist from Dianda, including keeping her son Peter Lorden hostage. During an altercation, Torin stabs Toby with a jagged knife, deep enough that it would have killed her if she hadn't been Dochas Sidhe - although a piece of Toby's spine was removed and had to be regenerated. He also holds Gillian hostage to make Toby stand down, however Tybalt throws him in the Shadow Roads and non-fatally asphyxiates him into unconsciousness. Upon Amphitrite's arrival, he faints upon exposure to her.

Later, it is revealed that he is the one who murdered Isla Chase, although it was by accident. The two of them had been lovers, but they had a fight that ended with Isla dead. It is also revealed that Torin came to the Duchy of Ships because he was tasked by Evening Winterrose to stop the Luidaeg from bringing back the Roane, partially using his sister's charges for treason as pretense to enter the Duchy of Ships. As a punishment, Amphitrite denies him as a descendant, which she says is harsher than exile. Torin begs Dianda to speak up for him, but Dianda is offended by the request.

Relationships[]

Morcan of Saltmist[]

Morcan is Torin's father by blood, although he has given up his parental rights of Torin when he divorced Torin's mother.

Dianda Lorden[]

Dianda is Torin's elder sibling, although the two of them picked different parents in the divorce. The two of them are not close, and Torin thinks Dianda marrying a land fae and having children was a crime.

Isla Chase[]

Isla is Torin's former lover, whom he accidentally killed during an argument regarding the Roane.

October Daye[]

Torin views Toby with disdain, both as a changeling and a lander. Upon revelation of her identity, Torin further shows disgust, aware of her reputation among Fae nobility as a kingbreaker. He was willing to hold Gillian hostage to get Toby to surrender his nephews to him.

Evening Winterrose[]

Torin is loyal to Evening, so much so that he was fooled into believing that the Roane had caused most of the devastation in Faerie and was willing to sabotage the Convocation of Consequences.
