Stage of Fools is a short story written for Seanan McGuire's Patreon supporters, and the first October Daye story released on Patreon. It is best read as third in the Tybalt Shorts and pairs closely with its sequel The Voice of Lions.

Author's Summary[]
This is an early Tybalt story, set after "Forbid the Sea," dealing with his time as King of Cats in distant Londonium, long before October, or San Francisco, or even North America.[1]

Plot []
Tybalt is in low spirits as the solitary Cait Sidhe in London. He drunkenly visits a bar, where he is greeted by Colleen, who has returned to London. She invites him on a lighthearted chase through the streets, then tells him she is to be put to death by the monarchs of Londinium for causing the death of their son Prince Santon. She had been Santon's lover and asked her to marry him before he died mysteriously.
Tybalt visits the Court of Londinium and demands they leave Colleen be. He offers to find Santon's killer, then tracks Colleen down and discovers the other reason that Heydon and Lettice hate her: She had been Santon's lover and born his child, a mixed-blood. Tybalt determines that Santon's sister Cyne killed him rather than have Colleen's daughter above her in line for the throne. He agrees to use a hope chest to remove the Daoine Sidhe heritage, and therefore Cailin's claim to Londinium, if the monarchs agree to leave them alone.
