Lamia are a child-eating monster of Greek mythology. They are first referenced in Rosemary and Rue.

Characters[]

Devin (suspected)[]

Devin is a changeling and suspected by Toby to have lamia heritage. However, she was thinblooded when she knew Devin and unable to confirm her suspicions.[1]

Mythology[]

The original Lamia was said to be a beautiful woman beloved of Zeus, but after Zeus's jealous wife Hera destroyed all her children, or caused Lamia herself to kill her own offspring, she became disfigured from the torment, transforming into a terrifying being who hunted and killed the children of others. Lamia have been ascribed serpentine qualities and are depicted as half-woman, half-snake beasts.

Hera afflicted the original Lamia with permanent insomnia. Zeus, taking pity on her, endowed Lamia with the gift of prophecy and the ability to temporarily remove her eyes to relieve her sleeplessness.

Lamia were depicted in Greek mythos as both child-eaters and seductresses, often preying on the youth to satisfy their sexual appetite and feeding on their flesh afterward.
