Jolgeir, colloquially called "Joe," is the king of the Court of Whispering Cats, in Portland Oregon. He first appears in A Red-Rose Chain.

About[]

Joe has a human wife named Libby, and three daughters with her. The middle daughter, Ginevra, is a Princess of Cats.

Joe has silver hair, appearing to be in his 60s, though that is assumedly part of his human disguise. His magic smells of heavy paper and pine.

His court shares territory with the Kingdom of Silences, despite their disgust towards animalistic Fae and changelings.

In the Series[]

A Red-Rose Chain[]

Tybalt and Toby visit Jolgeir during their trip to the Kingdom of Silences, and Toby offers to shift the balance of his changeling daughters' blood to full fae. This endears her to him, and he offers his court as an ally if the Kingdom in the Mists go to war with Silences.

After Toby deposes King Rhys, she follows through on her promise to shift his daughters' blood.

Night and Silence[]

Tybalt, traumatized after captivity by Amandine and planning to step down as king when he marries Toby, asks Jolgeir to lend his daughter Ginevra to the Court of Dreaming Cats to act as regent for Raj until Raj is ready to become a full King of Cats. Jolgeir is willing but leaves the decision to Ginevra, reminding Tybalt the consequences of ceding the throne temporarily.

The Innocent Sleep[]

Ginevra reaches out to her father while all the non-royal cats are trapped in the Court of Cats. He is keeping his people fed by placing bulk cat food orders through the comic store accounts. Libby is helping as well. He doesn't want Ginevra to worry about him, and when she keeps offering to help him out he cuts off contact with her for a time.

Relationships[]

Libby[]

Jolgier adores his human wife, Libby. They have been married for over thirty years. When she becomes elderly, he intends to step down from his throne to care for her.

Tybalt[]

The two Kings of Cats are longtime friends and allies.

Trivia[]

  • Jolgeir bears a notable resemblance to real comic book store owner Joe Field. The human Joe also has a wife named Libby and three daughters, although his comic book store is located in Concord, California.[2] Seanan McGuire frequented his comic shop throughout her childhood and promised to have her first Marvel signing at his store.[1][3][4]
