Author Summary[]
When Cyne returns to Londinium, Tybalt finds himself needing to remember what it truly is to be a King of Cats...and fast, before his family is endangered.
Plot[]
Napping and at peace for once in the Court of Fogbound Cats, Tybalt is interrupted by his sister Colleen, who is concerned about the return of Cyne to Londinium, as the last time Cyne had been there, she had kidnapped Cailin. Tybalt consoles her, promising that they will go to war if such a thing were to happen again. He goes through the Shadow Roads to find September ap Learianth, in order to fetch Cailin from her lessons. He arrives in the sculpture garden, reflects upon Septimius Torquill, Glynis Torquill, and Celaeno, then seeks out September and Cailin to watch the end of their lesson. September invites Tybalt to stay for a while and drink, but he turns her down and promises another time, as he and Cailin are needed in the Court of Cats.
Taking the Shadow Roads back home, Tybalt and Cailin are greeted by Marjorie, one of the court who had recently had kittens. Cailin questions why Tybalt had interrupted her lesson, and Tybalt confirms Cyne's return, and promises to protect Cailin from her. Colleen bids Cailin not to leave the Court of Cats without permission and an escort. Cailin demands freedom, and accidentally asks Tybalt to go to war for her sake.
Tybalt travels to the court of King Heydon and Queen Lettice and greets them and Cyne. Speaking diplomatically, Tybalt assures the three of them that any attacks on his family will result in war.
Later that morning, beckoned by Colleen, Tybalt is confronted by Malcolm ap Learianth, who says that his marriage to September has been ended by Heydon and Lettice, and that September has been taken to the service of Cyne and Flag Fen, leaving him locked out of his own home.
