Doppelgangers are a type of land fae capable of taking on the perfect appearance of other people. They first appear in Rosemary and Rue.
About[]
Abilities[]
Doppelgangers can take on the form of (almost) anyone, and can fake most things - but they cannot fake the scent of someone's magic, which can be used to identify them[1]. When they die, they melt into a pool of sticky slime.[2]
Description[]
Dopplegangers in their natural form have too many sharp teeth and alien, pale yellow eyes. The doppelganger Toby meets in Rosemary and Rue was "tall and sexless, the angles of its body were inexplicably wrong. Its skin was mottled in shapeless patches of gray and green that shifted—chameleonic, blending into the scenery until it was ready to strike." [2]
Other[]
Doppelgangers are created by the use of mandrakes, a "dark and creepy" method of magic.[3] This, and referring to Doppelgangers as "it," suggest that they are not considered people.
In the Series[]
Rosemary and Rue[]
Toby accidentally lets a Doppelganger into her house because it is wearing the face of Gillian, her daughter. Toby realizes something is wrong because "Gillian" doesn't react to the fact that she's not wearing her illusions. The Doppelganger demands to know where Toby put the Hope Chest, but it doesn't seem overly interested in the answer, as it tries to kill Toby right after. Dare and Manuel Lorimer arrive just in time to help put an end to it. Dare kills the Doppelganger and it melts into sticky goo.[2]
A Local Habitation[]
January is suspicious of October and thinks she might be a Doppelganger, but Toby proves her identity with her magic signature. This suggests that Doppelgangers are unable to copy someone's magic (at least to January's knowledge).
An Artificial Night[]
Toby first assumes that May Daye is a doppleganger, rather than her Fetch.
When Sorrows Come[]
A number of Doppelgangers employed by Absalom Shallcross had replaced a large bulk of the staff in the High King's knowe. A Doppelganger masquerading as Nessa attempts to assassinate Aethlin but is discovered by Toby.
