Mythology[]
Djinn originate from pre-Islamic Arabian and later Islamic mythology and theology. They are considered neither good nor evil, their natures dependent on the individual creatures. They feature in folklore and are held responsible for misfortune, possession and diseases. However, the jinn are sometimes supportive and benevolent.
Djinn also appear in accounts of Arabic pagan witchcraft. A sorcerer was able to summon a djinn and command it to possess mortals, while soothsayers called upon them as a source of information. Today they are often called "genies."[1]
