Goldengreen is a knowe tucked behind the San Francisco Fine Art Museum at the Legion of Honor, right at the edge of the cliff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It is the seat of the County of Goldengreen.
About[]
Initially, Goldengreen is Evening Winterrose’s knowe, and the gateway to her small holdings in the Summerlands. It was locked and sealed after her death, by her own wishes. She was a Countess in name only, with the title and the land, but no subjects.[1] In Rosemary and Rue, Toby visits the knowe to look for clues about Evening's death.
In Late Eclipses, Toby is named Countess of Goldengreen by the Queen of the Mists, and she has to deal with opening and cleaning up the hostile knowe in Through This House. While there, a pixie brings her a “chunk of rose quartz the size of a duck’s egg”, which she realizes is the knowe. From it, she learns that Goldengreen was one of the first knowes opened in San Francisco. It was opened by Amandine working in tandem with a red-haired woman Toby didn’t recognize. Amy left, leaving the knowe to the readhead. The redhead left, replaced by a Daoine Sidhe woman unfamiliar to Toby; she was followed by Evening Winterrose.[2]
After the events of One Salt Sea, Toby surrenders her title to Dean Lorden to create an alliance between the Kingdom in the Mists and the Duchy of Saltmist. From this point on, Toby visits the knowe regularly to talk to either Dean or his parents, Dianda and Patrick Lorden.
In A Killing Frost, it is revealed that Eira built Goldengreen on land that was previously claimed by the Luidaeg, and the only way to move it would be to destroy and rebuild the knowe, which she is unwilling to do at this point.[3]

Description[]
The knowe of Goldengreen is isolated and urban at the same time, a thing of borders, like the city itself. As all knowes, it reflects the style and the needs of its rulers, and mourns if its ruler is killed. In the time of Dean Lorden, there is a cove-sized receiving room, that Toby suspects wasn't there before Dean's relation to the Undersea made it necessary.[4]
There is a beautiful main courtyard, "a vast, circular room with crystal panels in the domed ceiling"[2] allowing sunlight or moonlight from the Summerlands to enter. Pixies were formerly used to light the knowe under Evening's rule.
In the Summerlands, it looks like a palace "made of delicately interwoven seashells rising out of the surf". It gleams with pale pink pearlescent light.[3]
Toby remarks that Goldengreen itself never liked Evening due to her cruelty. The knowe's health flourished under both Toby and Dean's care.
