A Barghest is a type of land fae that appears as a monstrous black dog with huge teeth and claws. They are first referenced in Late Eclipses.
About[]
Barghests are "corgi-sized, semicanine monsters with venomous stings and retractable claws." Their tails resemble those of scorpions, and they have horns.[1] They make a "weird yodel" instead of barking, but their growl is very intimidating. They are trainable and intelligent. [2] There is a common misconception that their drool is venomous.[1]

Several of Danny's barghest rescues. He first contains them with October Daye's help and now keeps them as pets. [1] When Danny brings them along to clean out Goldengreen, the barghests enjoy running around the knowe and playing with the bogey and pixies.[2]
Mythology []
The barghest is a legendary monstrous black dog with huge teeth and claws, though in other cases the name can refer to a ghost or household elf. Besides taking the form of a large black dog with fiery eyes, it could also become invisible and walk about with the sound of rattling chains. At the death of any notable person the barghest would appear, followed by all the other dogs of the local region in a kind of funeral procession, and begin howling and baying. It may also foretell the death of an individual by lying across the threshold of his or her house. It is sometimes said that like the vampire the barghest is unable to cross rivers.[3]
