Afanc are a type of land fae that appear as a blend of crocodile and beaver. They first appear in Ashes of Honor.
About[]
Afanc are about the size of a cow, with fur, scales, a spadelike tail and a "disturbing number of teeth." They have webbed forepaws and rounded ears.[1]
Afanc live in lakes and marshes of deep Faerie, and they are reasonably harmless and friendly, although they have been known to drown people who startle them. They are fish-eaters, but they still have a lot of teeth, because fish in their homeland Tirn Aill are capable of defending themselves.[1]
Prior to 2012, nobody had seen one in centuries and most fae assume that they are extinct or locked somewhere in Deep Faerie. The latter has since been confirmed.[1]

A rogue Afanc first appears in Ashes of Honor. Toby calls Sylvester when she finds a sleeping beast on top of her car, and she can't decide if it is hostile or not. She is horrified when Sylvester gasps in delight and runs with open arms to pet the creature, but the Afanc accepts the contact gladly and wags its tail. Sylvester takes the creature back to Shadowed Hills, assuming it came from somebody's private collection, while Toby and Etienne are aware that it most likely got to the human world because of Chelsea's gates.[1]
Sylvester keeps the Afanc as a pet. Sometimes it poops on the walking paths of Shadowed Hills.[2]
Mythology[]
The Afanc, sometimes called Addanc, is a creature in Welsh mythology that is described variously as resembling a crocodile, beaver or dwarf-like creature. It is an individual creature tied to a specific body of water much like the Loch Ness monster, though its lake of origin varies by story. It was said to prey upon any foolish enough to fall into or swim in its waters.
Afanc in Modern Welsh is now used to mean "beaver."
